Woweeeeeee, Year 6 performed their socks off today. Our audiences were wonderful too. Congratulations everyone. One more show to go... It's only a shame that Roald Dahl himself can't see the show - Dahl's Dream.

Following a beautifully sunny day of sporting prowess, healthy competitiveness, sportsmanship, endurance, power and agility, Downs Junior School STILL managed to muster enough energy to perform Waka Waka at the closing ceremony of Sports Day 2017. Well done everyone - just look at the=at coordination! This year's top 3 bands visited Downs Infant School this afternoon to perform to the children and staff. They performed confidently and professionally, and brilliantly demonstrated their musical skills. To watch videos of their performances, visit the Battle of the Bands 2017 page or our school music YouTube channel.
Huge congratulations to the Year 6 team. Their first ever performance of Dahl's Dream was a triumph. Feedback from audience members has been incredibly positive and encouraging.
More photos can be seen on the Roald Dahl page. However this page is currently password protected, because we don't want you all to hear the songs and know our secrets, until the shows are over! Currently, only Year 6 can view that page. They have 3 more performances next week. Tuesday morning to the rest of the school, then again on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon to families. Break a leg! Well done to the 50 violinists who performed in today's concert to families. Huge thanks to our violin teacher, Lisa De Simone. To see photos and video clips from today's concert, and to learn more about violin lessons in school, visit the Violin page.
Thank you to everyone involved in this evening's sunny summer festival - especially to FODJ (Friends of Downs Junior School) and the staff volunteers.
Mega Choir sang beautifully and confidently, maintaining their harmonies and timings, sprinkled with gorgeous solos. Congratulations Mega Choir. Well done also to the Battle of the Bands Top 3 from this year's final. You played and sang sensationally! Magical music all round and the SUN was very happy! CLICK HERE to watch videos of their performances. 4F and 4PY performed brilliantly in their concerts on Wednesday. It was hard to believe they've only had 9 lessons on pBuzz and ukulele. Huge thanks to our brass teacher Sarah Leeves. If any of you are interested in learning a brass instrument with Sarah, visit the brass page. Similarly, if you'd like to transfer your ukulele skills to guitar, contact our guitar teacher, Tom. Extra thanks to our wonderful voice soloists (Tryphena, Ollie, Omer and Jemima) and our percussionists (Albert, Ewan and Albert). Well done to our surprise special guest in the 4F concert - Patrick. He sang from the sidelines with such passion and joy. Thanks Patrick! Good luck to all the children who are performing in tomorrow's ukulele and pBuzz concerts.
I know you are going to musically SHINE! A reminder that the performance times are: 4PY - 13:50 - 14:10 4F - 14:50 - 15:10 Families are very welcome to attend. Thanks and congratulations to today's musicians: Rosie, Thad, Florence, Jasmine, Suzie, Ella, Evie, Leo, Adele, Flora, Misa, Claudie, Betty and Sophie (all on piano) and Laurie (on double bass).
Your performances on piano and double bass were incredible. You had clearly practised a lot., and some of you had even memorised a lot of your music. It was impressive when some of you improvised some melodies and performed music you'd composed yourselves. Huge thanks also to our talented teachers: Alice Hawkes (piano) and Francesca Urquhart (Double Bass). Video playlists are available to watch on the PIANO page and the DOUBLE BASS page. Have a look and a listen!
We are sorry to inform you that keyboard lessons will no longer be available at Downs Junior School from September 2017.
This is Kaya performing an interesting interpretation of a well-known song by Ed Sheeran. The lyrics have been internationally translated, then translated back to English, using google!
Thanks for the entertainment Kaya! HUGE thanks to Pulse of the Place samba band. They travelled through the night on a coach from Edinburgh to be with us, before heading on to Varndean. They will be performing tomorrow at 14:30 at the Peter Pan playground (near the Volks railway), 16:30 outside Unitarian Church and at 19:00 by Palace Pier. Please go along and support these incredibly talented kids if you can. Thank you. Rohan Seilman is an ex-pupil of Downs Junior School. Following his time at DJS he and his family moved to Edinburgh, where he remained. He has since led a successful youth percussion group in Edinburgh (called Pulse of the Place) and works for the arts charity Arts Afternoon.
His Samba group have been invited to perform in Brighton this weekend - they're performing at numerous venues over the next few days: Unitarian Church, Peter Pan playground and Palace Pier. Today, Rohan kindly returned to the school to deliver free samba workshops with the Year 6 classes. Tomorrow - he's returning with his youth samba group Pulse of the Place. They will perform for the whole school in two assemblies. Updates will be posted to the SAMBA page. |
