We witnessed many stunning performances today:
Mega Choir sang a song in Swahili for our Kenyan visitors and they LOVED it! They also sang Raise My Voice, Believe and Butterfly - demonstrating their abilities to sing in harmony. Orchestra were in fine form - in fine tune and fine time as they performed a tango, a waltz, Somewhere Only We Know and Concerning Hobbits (from Lord of the Rings). We were also treated to some solo performances from some of the members of the orchestra: Alisha, Ewan, Anna, Belle, Raffi and Madeleine. Today's concerts finished with performances from the two winning bands from Battle of the Bands 2014. Sadly, Lucas was unwell and unable to perform so The (remaining) Outlaws pulled it together for a rocking performance of their song 'Rage' with Ido on piano, Stan on drums, Mackenzie on bass and Jyoti and Liam on vocals. Then the concert closed with I.N.C. performing Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive' - Hamish on bass and Stan and Eva on guitar and vocals. Well done everyone - your hard work and dedication this year more that paid off in the concerts - Miss Rusbatch was invited to attend the Royal Gala at the Rose Theatre, Kingston on Friday night. The event officially opens the International Youth Arts Festival and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex was there. It was a great evening of music, drama, dance and poetry and the theatre and its cafe look wonderful. We'll all be there on 23rd July! Bravo 4W and 4R - you entertained the audiences yesterday during your ukulele concerts. Your rendition of Hound Dog was particularly memorable!
Thank you very much to the children and their families who attended the school's summer fair on Saturday. We witnessed super performances from some of the members of the school orchestra, the mega choir, the Albatross cast and the top 3 bands from the Battle of the Bands 2014. Well done everyone. The musicians who were providing the music for the barn dance were REALLY impressed with your performances and wanted me to pass on their feedback.
Congratulations to all of our talented guitarists. You performed excellently today. Thanks to the parents who were able to come and watch. Special thanks to our wonderful guitar teacher Tom Butterworth - we are incredibly lucky to have such an inspiring and passionate teacher in our school - the kids LOVE their lessons with Tom and that was evident in the concerts today. BRAVO.
I.N.C (Eva, Stan, Hamish and manager Evie), The Outlaws (Stanley, Ido, Jyoti, Liam, Mackenzie, Lucas and manager Bradley) and Checkpoint (Minnie, Ted, Luke, Jack, Samuel and Noah) performed to a lively and enthusiastic audience at Downs Infant School today. They performed their own songs brilliantly. Well done and thank you to everyone who has contributed to the development of there talented bands.
The Rwandan crisis of 1994 dispersed millions of people from their homes - forcing them to become refugees. Many of these people were young children. The musical Kesho Amahoro (Peace Tomorrow) tells the story of some of these children, through the eyes of an NGO worker (Lizzie Jago) who lived and worked in the refugee camps in 1994 and 1995. For more information, visit the Kesho Amahoro website.
Have a look at this music timeline (since 1950): It shows genres of music waxing and waning, based on how many Google Play Music users have an artist or album in their music library, and other data (such as album release dates). Each stripe on the graph represents a genre; the thickness of the stripe tells you roughly the popularity of music released in a given year in that genre. (For example, the "jazz" stripe is thick in the 1950s since many users' libraries contain jazz albums released in the '50s.) Click on the stripes to zoom into more specialised genres. http://research.google.com/bigpicture/music/
