SEPTEMBER 2015 - MUSIC CLUBS:
Jam Band will start on Tuesday 15th September Mega Choir will start on Wednesday 16th September Orchestra will start on Thursday 1st October I hope you've all had a wonderful summer break. I look forward to seeing your fresh faces tomorrow (Friday) for the first day of the new academic year.
Dear Grown Up, RUGBY WORLD CUP CONCERT – INVITATION TO PERFORM Sunday 20th September 2015 – 2.30-3.00 and 4.30-5.00 The children at Downs Junior School have been rehearsing with Miss Rusbatch for a very special, once-in-a-lifetime, cultural and celebratory event: The talented songwriter James Redwood has been working with children and staff in a number of schools throughout Brighton and Hove, including Downs Junior School. The aim of the workshops was to create original rugby-inspired material (body percussion, beat boxing and songs), the results of which will be performed at a public concert to celebrate the Rugby World Cup (RWC). The RWC is being hosted in England this year with the teams from South Africa, USA, Samoa and Japan being based here in Brighton and Hove. The event is free and will take place on Sunday 20th September 2015 on a huge stage outside the Unitarian Church on New Road. Please put this date in your diary. We will be involved in two mass-choir performances: 2.30pm-3.00pm and 4.30pm-5.00pm. In addition, there will be countless performances from bands, ensembles and arts organisations from around the city. DRESS CODE: A top, which is predominantly RED in colour. Black trousers/shorts/skirt. The event is for children who will be in years 5, 6, 7 & 8 this September. The Year 6 children who are leaving us this year may be moving on to a secondary school that is also taking part. I can confirm that Varndean and Dorothy Stringer Schools are both taking part and will be participating in the same concert with their Year 7 and Year 8 students in September. Unfortunately, the children who are currently in Year 3 (and will be entering Year 4 in September) are too young to perform on stage at the event, but I’m hoping plenty of you will come in your droves to support the older children and maybe even join in from within the audience. REHEARSAL: There will be an important rehearsal for everyone who is interested in taking part on Thursday 17th September 3.45pm – 5.45pm at Varndean School. Further details of this event will be distributed in September. I’m hoping you all have a lovely summer break and wishing the Year 6 children a wonderfully exciting and smooth transition to Year 7. Musical regards, Anna Rusbatch Head of Music – Downs Junior School www.downsjuniormusic.com ![]()
WOW WOW WOW - Year 6 you were all INCREDIBLE this week. 5 performances in 3 days - each show a huge success. Thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this show together.
The live band were faultless. The Musical Director and pianist (Jacy, aged 11) glued the 90 minute show together by providing fill-music, incidental music and full accompaniment for all of the songs. Joseph lifted the melodies of the songs beautifully on his violin and Daniel brilliantly accompanied 6WPM on guitar. Solid percussion performances were provided by Hugh, Tom W, Ingrid, Frank and Rhythmic Raffi! The tech teams in each class were so focused and precise - their lighting cues and sound effects hugely added to the atmosphere and professionalism of the whole show. The children involved in making and sourcing props and costumes did a great job. All of the performers on stage truly brought Roald Dahl's fabulous story to life. Final congratulations and thanks to every staff member who worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to create such a wonderful performance opportunity for our brilliant students before they head off to high school. STANDING OVATIONS, RAPTUROUS APPLAUSE AND TEARS OF HAPPINESS AND PRIDE. Many, many thanks to everyone involved in last week's Summer Festival BBQ, especially the members of FODJ - thanks to everyone who did their part in organising, participating or attending. By all accounts, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, and the Children's Laureate Chris Riddell thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
I am incredibly proud of all of the children who performed on the stage and I was excited about the formation of a staff/parent band! Huge thanks to the talented parents and members of staff who took part, including Mr Franceschi on tambourine! Please note that ALL music clubs (choirs, orchestra and ensembles) have now ended for this academic year. A new club will be introduced in the Autumn Term; it will be for confident drummers, guitarists and ukulele players in years 5 and 6. The club will provide an opportunity to jam, improvise, compose and perform together and will also include optional singing, rapping and beat boxing. The timings below are approximate. Please ensure that performers are in the middle playground, near the stage, at least 15 minutes before the approximate time slots below. Thank you. ![]()
